A very attractive 1878 key date shield nickel graded PR 65 by PCGS. It carries a superior proof quality strike throughout both sides with lightly toned original and attractive surfaces. This 1878 shield nickel is definitely one of the keys to the series and was only minted as a proof strike coin. The haziness you see in the photos is caused by a few minor hit marks on the holder. This date holds a very low mintage of only 2,350. Of this mintage, the PCGS Coin Facts estimates that only 1,900 have survived in all grades today. This coin is one of only 293 graded Proof 65 by PCGS.
