1838 $ Classic Head Half Eagle NGC XF 45 Extra Fine Looks AU+ Old Fatty Holder

A very attractive 1838 Classic Head Half Eagle $5 gold piece graded XF 45 by NGC. It carries a strong strike throughout both sides with a great deal of mint luster remaining throughout both the obverse and reverse. This appealing coin has been housed in an older style 'NGC Fatty Holder'. We believe it would very likely grade About Uncirculated by PCGS or NGC according to today's grading standards. A tougher U.S type coin to find stored in one of these older style holder. This Classic Head gold piece holds a low mintage of 286,588. However, of this mintage the PCGS Coin Facts estimates that only 700 have survived in all grades today. This coin is one of only 112 graded Extra Fine 45 by NGC.
