An absolutely beautiful 1814 Plain 4, classic head large cent graded About Uncirculated Details 'surfaces smoothed' by PCGS. This coin carries an exceptional strike throughout both sides and looks like it should be just a touch away from a full mint state grade coin. We originally thought this coin would grade problem free but PCGS has deemed the coin to have 'surfaces smoothed'. We believe it could have potentially been cleaned at some time but believe their designation is quite harsh. This coin is one of the nicest classic head large cents we have ever offered in all of our 15+ years in the coin business/hobby. It is a very difficult coin to find in extra fine or better condition for this type. This appealing coin has been housed in a PCGS secure label holder. This date holds a low mintage of only 357,830. However, of this mintage the PCGS Coin Facts estimates that only 1,500 have survived in all grades today.
